Years ago the rivalry between two areas that seemed irreconcilable within a person’s life was pretty common. I’m talking about the area of sport and that of mental training. So, long ago, talking of “mental sports” would have been a contradiction, an invention, almost an absurdity.
But things change and, luckily, this has changed for good – as the mind can be trained, we are also able to play sports with it. What kinds of sports have been accepted to train the mind? If you pay attention to the headline of this article, you will get to know the greatest example of this new trend: the game of poker.
This is no longer a hypothesis by an online casino fan, nor is it an expression of desire – it is just reality. How can we say so? Well, not only the game of poker has been accepted as a mental sport, but it has also has been classified as such by major global organizations such as the International Mind Sports Association (Asociación Internacional de Deportes Mentales – IMSA) and, furthermore, the talks are underway to ensure that poker will be one of the World Games in the city of London and to be registered as one of their Olympic sports by the International Olympic Committee. Thus, poker would become an Olympic sport by its own right, and not just the subject of some online casino websites that organize their own Poker Olympiads.
This good news is quite significant for every professional poker player, at least for two reasons:
1) Poker will share the category with acknowledged mental sport games such as chess
2) The International Mind Sports Association has been recognized by the International Olympic Committee and, therefore, any association, club, and poker organization being a part of it will be automatically recognized by that committee, which would give a great deal of professionalism to the poker player, taking this activity from a mere hobby to an international sport in its own right.
It was about time that an activity as enjoyable and as mentally engaging like poker got some recognition. It was just logical, as poker is not one of those games you play against a machine – not even in online versions. Poker means interaction with other players and it requires the deployment of a number of strategies that some card games that are much simpler and more linked to chance cannot offer to players.
